Project Overview
GOALS: Strengthen border security and streamline cargo inspection.
The project objective was to solve the dual challenge of modern border control: enhancing security to stop sophisticated smuggling while simultaneously streamlining trade flows to boost the economy. This solution was engineered to serve both mandates, providing high-assurance security with minimal economic disruption. This project, referencing the “ZATCA CARGO TERMINALS (SAUDI CUSTOMS)” , is a key case study for the “Customs & Border Control Authorities” sector.
- Challenges
Customs agencies faced rising cargo volumes and sophisticated smuggling techniques. They needed high-throughput scanning with minimal disruption to trade flows.
The challenge is asymmetric. Smugglers constantly evolve their methods, while port operators are constrained by finite space and the economic imperative to increase throughput. This creates immense cognitive overload for human inspectors. With rising volumes, officers have less time to analyze each scan, increasing the risk of “human error”. A fragmented approach—where an X-ray machine is disconnected from cargo manifests and intelligence databases—is no longer viable.
- ABOUT THE PROJECT
Arbana’s team supplied, integrated, and maintained more than eleven large-scale cargo scanning gantries for customs authorities across the region. Arbana’s expertise spans screening technologies such as X-ray, CT, and under-vehicle scanners.

- OUR APPROACH
Arbana’s approach fused best-in-class hardware with a powerful data integration and compliance framework.
- Advanced Screening: Arbana delivered high-energy X-ray gantry systems capable of scanning whole containers without unpacking, integrated with explosives/narcotics trace detection and smart analytics. This is a “modular and integrated” solution. The X-ray gantry is fused with other “Screening & Detection Systems” and supercharged by “AI-Powered Analytics”. These “smart analytics” use AI-driven threat recognition to automatically flag suspicious densities or shapes within the scan, “reduc[ing] human error” and directing officers’ attention to the highest-risk cargo.
- Data Integration: Each gantry fed into a centralized command platform, allowing customs officers to correlate scans with cargo manifests and risk profiles. This is the core of the solution. The workflow is seamless: the gantry (hardware) scans, the system (software) automatically pulls the associated cargo manifest (data) and queries a risk profile (intelligence).
